About the Don Stewart Memorial Trust

Trust establishment

The establishment of the Trust was announced jointly by the Stewart Family and College Rifles at the Club Annual Meeting in November 2020, as a long-term legacy in remembrance of Don.

Capital pool target

The capital pool target for the Don Stewart Memorial Trust is to reach $1.0 million by 2031, ten years from formation. At this time (hopefully longer) it is expected the existing synthetic fields at College Rifles Park will require replacement, again. The replacement is forecast to cost a minimum of $2.0 million at this time. As the Club experienced during the field replacement in 2019 other financial supporters of the Club facilities, such as the Auckland Council and Community groups, require the Club to provide matching funding.

Sporting fields and facilities

The sporting fields and facilities are the lifeblood of the Club, without which our Club would not be able to operate as it does now or provide the facilities for our local community that are so desperately required.

A great contributor to College Rifles

Don was a keen rugby tourist, including the 1995 Golden Oldies Tournament in Christchurch. I drew the short straw and had to room with Grumpy.

Also a keen story teller, at breakfast on the first day he proceeded to tell everyone how I had snored, expelled and belched all night. Sorry Don! Now I knew why they called him ‘Grumpy’.

One night arriving back late and Don was sleeping like a baby, it was time to get my own back. I shook him awake asking how he expected me to sleep with all the noise he was now making. Not to be disturbed for long, Don simply humbly apologised, rolled over and went back to sleep.

It worked, we got on like a house on fire ever since and have been the best of friends, until sadly he passed away. Fortunately, 10 years later I finally got up the nerve to tell him the truth, that he really does sleep like a baby.

Here’s to a great contributor to College Rifles.
